Update Sept. 15 | Learning, Entry & Exit, Technology, Staff

Dear Parents/Guardians

Our school year is off to a solid start and as you may know, we are a growing school.  Guy Weadick School welcomes students from Taradale and most recently from Homestead.  Together our population of students has established clear and consistent patterns for learning. As our numbers continue to change, we are doing our best to accommodate learning with the fewest number of changes in classrooms for students and for teachers.  Changes in organization are never a first choice, but we will continue to transition students as we continue our work for successful learning.

Learning

We come to school to learn.  It is the right and responsibility of students to learn.  As citizens of Guy Weadick School community, we respect the rights of our own learning and the learning of others in the hallways, the lunchroom, the classroom, the playground and the bus.  We are respectful digital citizens and use technology in responsible ways.

Entry Doors in the Morning to Begin our Learning Day

Each day, students from Grades 1 – 6 are welcomed to come into the school at 08:25 AM when the doors are opened for our “soft entry”.  This allows students to come into the building, greet teachers and peers and get ready for their learning to begin.  The morning bell rings at 08:30 AM and students in the playground are ushered into the school.   Students who arrive after the bell, should first go to door #1 where there is an attendance desk.  It is our hope that students arrive on time for their learning.   Students from Kindergarten meet at Door #5 each day.

Exit Doors at the End of the Learning Day

Students are dismissed out specific doors in order to have parents/guardians meet them.  On the back of each door, a chart indicating the doors and teachers will inform you as to what doors students exit.  If you have more than one child and they are leaving out different doors, setting a meeting place is a great idea to make sure that your child(ren) meet you safely at the end of the learning day. Please note that these numbers, depending on school organization can change as the year progresses.

Technology

Recently, Mr. Peters our Learning Leader shared a technology policy of Guy Weadick School aligned with the Calgary Board of Education.  All classes worked with Mr. Peters and the members of their class to understand the responsible use of technology as a teaching and learning tool at GWS.  Students were to take the form home, have a discussion with their parents/guardians and have the form signed and returned to school.  We are excited to get technology into the hands of our students as soon as possible and look forward to having completed class sets of forms returned to the school as soon as possible.

Meet the Teacher Event

As a school community, we will be welcoming families to our
GUY WEADICK SCHOOL MEET THE TEACHER EVENT OPEN HOUSE

No Appointment Required!

Date: SEP 21, 2023
Time: 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM

This is a great chance to come and meet the teachers and have your child(ren) share their learning spaces with you.  This is not an opportunity for a one on one conversation with the teacher, or to  discuss specific student progress.  Should you wish a one on one interview, please call the school and an appointment with a teacher (or teachers) can be arranged for specific questions or conversations.

School Council/Parent Association

  • Please watch for a special invitation coming out from Guy Weadick School Council/Parent Association about an upcoming meeting.  This is a wonderful way to take part in your supporting your child’s school as well as become involved in the many initiatives that make Guy Weadick School a great place for learning and growing together.

Finally, as you are aware, Calgary is a very fast-growing city.  As a result, our school is a receiver school for students from Temple (our own catchment area) as well as students who are assigned here from Taradale and Homestead.  We will continue to address our growing numbers with student success and student learning as the lens through which our decisions are made.  All organizational decisions are made at the school with this same lens to always keep learning and student success as a guide to our work together.  We look forward to a successful year of learning ahead.

Sincerely

Kevin Bauer
Interim Principal
